Reimagining Columbus

What is Indigenous Design and History?

Please join Reimagining Columbus, community design leaders, and architect Tamarah Begay, AIA, NCARB, AICAE, CDT, LEED AP BD+C, and founder of Indigenous Design Studio + Architecture (IDS+A), a Navajo woman-owned architectural firm in New Mexico, for a discussion using indigenous design and planning tools to create new public art and commemorative spaces that reflect Columbus’ collective history, values and aspirations Thursday, April 4, at CFAD, 50 W. Town St., Suite 110, 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m.

Tamarah is the lead architect for the Reimagining Columbus project, a two-year, community-driven project led by the Columbus Department of Development and a diverse, representative team of professionals from design, history, public engagement and cultural inclusion disciplines, who are tasked with developing recommendations for the Christopher Columbus statue removed from City Hall in 2020.

The April discussion is part of Reimagining Columbus’ plan to convene central Ohio residents for conversations about how our shared history and values can be best reflected through public art, monuments and symbols. There will be time for questions following Tamarah’s presentation.

Reimagining Columbus is funded by the Mellon Foundation’s Monuments Project with a $2 million grant. The city has committed $1.5 million to fund public art that results from the project.

Tamarah is a member of the Navajo Nation and has more than 10 years of experience working with Native American Tribes on public safety, judicial, education and housing projects; her recent work for the Navajo Nation has focused on feasibility studies and master planning. As a founding member of the American Indian Council of Architects and Engineers, Tamarah has long been committed to mentoring junior Native American office staff and students.

The Mellon Foundation’s Monuments Project aims to transform the nation’s commemorative landscape to ensure our collective histories are more completely and accurately represented.
