SUMMARY:Reimagining Columbus
DESCRIPTION:What is Indigenous Design and History? \nPlease join Reimagining Columbus\, community design leaders\, and architect Tamarah Begay\, AIA\, NCARB\, AICAE\, CDT\, LEED AP BD+C\, and founder of Indigenous Design Studio + Architecture (IDS+A)\, a Navajo woman-owned architectural firm in New Mexico\, for a discussion using indigenous design and planning tools to create new public art and commemorative spaces that reflect Columbus’ collective history\, values and aspirations Thursday\, April 4\, at CFAD\, 50 W. Town St.\, Suite 110\, 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. \nTamarah is the lead architect for the Reimagining Columbus project\, a two-year\, community-driven project led by the Columbus Department of Development and a diverse\, representative team of professionals from design\, history\, public engagement and cultural inclusion disciplines\, who are tasked with developing recommendations for the Christopher Columbus statue removed from City Hall in 2020. \nThe April discussion is part of Reimagining Columbus’ plan to convene central Ohio residents for conversations about how our shared history and values can be best reflected through public art\, monuments and symbols. There will be time for questions following Tamarah’s presentation. \nReimagining Columbus is funded by the Mellon Foundation’s Monuments Project with a $2 million grant. The city has committed $1.5 million to fund public art that results from the project. \nTamarah is a member of the Navajo Nation and has more than 10 years of experience working with Native American Tribes on public safety\, judicial\, education and housing projects; her recent work for the Navajo Nation has focused on feasibility studies and master planning. As a founding member of the American Indian Council of Architects and Engineers\, Tamarah has long been committed to mentoring junior Native American office staff and students. \nThe Mellon Foundation’s Monuments Project aims to transform the nation’s commemorative landscape to ensure our collective histories are more completely and accurately represented. \nFor more information and details about other upcoming conversations\, please visit www.reimaginingcolumbus.com \nRegister Here.

SUMMARY:The Orange Line: 2023 Holiday Train Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The Lazarus department store holiday window displays were extravagant winter worlds in miniature\, featuring trains\, and other festive decorations created for the flagship store Downtown. Inspired by that tradition\, CFAD again presents a contemporary take on the holiday train display. \nThis year we invite architects\, landscape architects\, designers\, students\, and community members to join in as we collectively contemplate possibilities for the Columbus street-scape to better integrate mass transit. As we explore the connection between future mass transit initiatives and the pedestrian\, CFAD announces our 2023 theme: \nEnhancing Columbus Streets: Mass Transit and the Pedestrian \nUp to 15 participating teams may purchase a 12”x18” plot along the train line – to display their design to enhance Columbus streets for mass transit and pedestrians. \nModels will be constructed with all white Lego™ bricks (clear for glass is acceptable) – no shorter than 24” and no taller than 48”. Lego™ sets to be used for your model are available at CFAD to be picked up\, or can be delivered to your firm. Please plan to join us at CFAD for an opening reception to celebrate the unveiling on Thursday\, November 30th\, from 5:30-7:30pm. \nRegisterPlease register online via Eventbrite. The fee to enter is $250. If you prefer to pay via check\, make it payable to CFAD\, 50 W. Town St.\, #110\, Columbus\, OH 43215. \nRegister Here \nQuestionsPlease contact CFAD at 614.469.1973 or email mail@columbuscfad.org. SUMMARY:Knowlton School Baumer Lecture Series - Frida Escobedo and Dominic Leong
DESCRIPTION:Frida EscobedoFrida Escobedo Studio \nFrida Escobedo established her eponymous studio in Mexico City in 2006. The studio’s reputation\, initially built on the strength of a series of competition-winning projects in her native country—including the renovation of the Hotel Boca Chica (2008)\, the El Eco Pavilion (2010)\, and the expansion of La Tallera Siquieros in Cuernavaca (2012)—has achieved global scope since 2018\, when she received the prestigious appointment to design the annual Serpentine Pavilion in London’s Kensington Gardens\, becoming the youngest architect to date to undertake the project. \nEscobedo’s practice defies the traditional boundaries of the discipline\, operating at a wide array of scales and mediums\, from buildings and experimental conservation projects to temporary installations and public sculpture\, limited edition objects\, publications\, and exhibition design. Most recently\, Escobedo was appointed as the architect to design the new Modern & Contemporary Wing for The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City\, becoming the youngest and first woman to design a building for the institution. \nFollowing her appointment as the Design Architect for The Tang Wing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, Frida Escobedo opened a studio in New York City in 2022. \nEscobedo is the recipient of numerous accolades\, including the Architectural League of New York’s Young Architects Forum Award (2009)\, the BIAU Prize (2014)\, the Architectural Review Emerging Architecture Award (2016)\, and the Architectural League Emerging Voices Award (2017). In 2019\, she was honored as an International Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA)\, and the studio was named by the seminal architecture magazine DOMUS as one of the world’s “100+ Best Architecture Firms.” In addition to her practice\, Escobedo has taught at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture (2016)\, Planning and Preservation (2015)\, the Architectural Association of London (2016)\, Harvard’s Graduate School of Design (2016/2019)\, Rice University (2019)\, and the most recently at the Yale University (2022). \nDominic Leong\, AIALeong Leong \nDominic Leong is a founding partner at Leong Leong\, where he focuses on architecture as an aesthetic\, social\, and ecological practice to address the pressing issues of our time. Dominic leads design\, research and operational efforts across a variety of projects at Leong Leong. The firm’s work ranges from private houses\, bespoke furniture collections\, product design\, exhibitions\, and temporary pavilions to cultural spaces\, civic buildings\, and social housing. \nAs a partner at Leong Leong\, Dominic’s work has been recognized and supported by various international institutions including the Guggenheim Museo Bilbao\, The Architectural League of New York\, the American Institute of Architects\, and the Graham Foundation. In 2014\, Leong Leong designed the US Pavilion at the 14th La Biennale di Venezia. \nProjects undertaken by Leong Leong and co-directed by Dominic include the Anita May Rosenstein Campus for the Los Angeles LGBT Center (2019); Ray Philly\, a multi-family development in Philadelphia\, PA (2022); 3.1 Phillip Lim Flagship in Seoul\, Korea (2010); MoMA PS1 Courtyard Coalition in Queens\, NY (2022); and Hancock Park House in Los Angeles\, CA (2023). \nDominic has been invited to teach at Columbia University\, The Cooper Union\, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology\, and he has lectured internationally at prominent institutions. \nDominic is also a co-founder of Hawai’i Nonlinear\, a Honolulu-based non-profit empowering Indigenous futures in the built environment through art and architecture. \nDominic received a Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design from Columbia University\, graduating with Honors. He received his Bachelor of Architecture from California Polytechnic State University\, San Luis Obispo. Dominic is a registered architect in the District of Columbia and the States of New York\, Hawai’i\, and Florida. \nThe Baumer Series invites prominent researchers and practitioners of architecture\, landscape architecture\, and city and regional planning to present their work and to engage subjects both topical and enduring. \n\n \nLearn More

SUMMARY:AIA Columbus Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The AIA Columbus 2023 Annual Meeting will feature Columbus City Council President Shannon Hardin. We will hear about the future of Columbus focusing on affordable housing\, transportation\, infrastructure\, and creating equitable neighborhoods. \nAbout Shannon Hardin: Born and raised on the south side of Columbus\, Council President Shannon Hardin is committed to building an equitable future that works for every resident in our city. As Columbus grows\, Council President Hardin is focused on fostering an inclusive economy by partnering to build mass transit and affordable housing\, empowering small and minority businesses\, and providing youth with pathways to the middle class. Regardless of the issue\, Council President Hardin views public policy through the saying\, “If it’s not for all\, then it’s not for us.” \nBased on his own experience going to Columbus City Schools and graduating college with six-figures of student debt\, Council President Hardin developed the Columbus Promise – an initiative to allow Columbus City School graduates to attend Columbus State Community College for free. Council President Hardin worked with Columbus State\, Columbus City Schools\, and “I Know I Can” to create a free\, guaranteed pathway for Columbus students to get a credential or degree. \nCouncil President Hardin believes that investing in transportation and infrastructure connects residents to jobs\, education\, and healthcare. As Co-Chair of the “Insight2050 Corridor Concepts Initiative”\, Council President Hardin led a collaborative effort to analyze what focusing new housing and business growth along high-capacity transit corridors could mean for our region’s economy\, health\, and environment. This study has gained traction as the vision for Columbus’ future and has evolved into “LinkUS Columbus”\, a collaborative initiative to develop advanced rapid transit and transportation options near housing and jobs. \nUnderstanding the racial inequities that impact Columbus communities every day\, Council President Hardin worked with former Mayor Coleman to create Columbus’s “My Brother’s Keeper initiative”\, which aims to reduce opportunity gaps for young men of color through city-wide goals\, service provider coordination\, and collective action. Understanding that black men were disproportionately burdened by marijuana laws\, Council President Hardin and Councilmember Shayla Favor spearheaded a two-part marijuana justice package: decreasing penalties for low-level marijuana possession and supporting record-sealing services to get formerly incarcerated residents back into safe housing and good-paying jobs. As a result of state and city action\, City Attorney Zach Klein will no longer prosecute low-level marijuana offenses. \nOver the years\, Council President Hardin has stepped up to lead big projects for the Columbus community. Led by President Hardin\, Council placed a bundle of reforms recommended by a citizen-led commission to improve Council’s accountability and neighborhood representation on the ballot. These changes overwhelmingly passed in May of 2018. Similarly\, Council President Hardin drove the effort to nearly double public support for arts\, which will improve family access to Columbus’ cultural gems while stabilizing civic treasures such as the Lincoln Theater\, the King Arts Complex\, and other historic arts establishments. \nMembers: Free\nNon-Members: $20 \n  \n\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Untitled.
DESCRIPTION:The Creative Best from 2022\nWhat if we stopped being creative?\nThe art would be taken out of our communication. \nDesign would be formed solely by function.A hard-to-look-at\, unmotivated mess. \nOur words would have less impact\, written without inspiration\,thought or melody. So this year\, the show that celebratescreativity will remain unstyled\, undesigned and untitled. \nThese pages hold the proof that creativity isn’tjust “nice to have”\, but rather\, the essential human elementthat helps change minds and shape ideas. \nThis is our Creative Best. The work that matters. \n \nLight refreshments and beverages are provided. \n \n View Winners

SUMMARY:The Orange Line
DESCRIPTION:THE 2022 HOLIDAY TRAIN EXHIBIT\nTHE CENTER FOR ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN IS ONCE AGAIN PLEASED TO CARRY FORTH A LAZARUS HOLIDAY TRADITION WITH A CITYSCAPE-INSPIRED HOLIDAY TRAIN WINDOW DISPLAY. \nPlease plan to join us at The Center for Architecture and Design for an opening reception to celebrate the unveiling on Friday\, December 2\, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. \nThe Lazarus department store holiday window displays were extravagant winter worlds in miniature\, featuring trains\, toys\, and other festive decorations created for the flagship store here at Town and High Streets. Inspired by that tradition\, the Center for Architecture and Design again presents a contemporary take on the holiday train display. \nThe well-crafted model is a powerful and evocative tool unique to the design professions. This year we invite architects\, landscape architects\, designers\, students\, and community members to show off their model-making chops and visionary thinking as we collectively contemplate possibilities for the skyline of Columbus with a … Public Transportation Hub & Accessibility of The Future. \nParticipating teams will purchase a 12″x18″ plot along the train line – upon which to mount their concept (a model) for a high-rise “hub” that establishes a much-needed infrastructure for the future of transportation in Columbus. \nThe transportation hub utilizes connections between the car\, bike\, train\, bus\, and pedestrian to help the community support and understand that access to quality public transportation equals freedom\, equity\, and inclusivity for all who call Central Ohio home and desire to visit and explore the city of Columbus. Models will be constructed with all white Legos™ (clear for glass is acceptable) – no shorter than 24″ and no taller than 48″. \nQuestions: Please contact The Center at 614.469.1973 or email mail@columbuscfad.org.
